Microsoft has announced their brand new ‘all-in-one’ business package for Dynamics 365. Exclusively sold through Microsoft CSP partners, the new offering brings an improved, modern ERP solution to the SMB end user market. Dynamics 365 Business Central is designed for businesses that have outgrown their basic accounting software and legacy ERP systems, enabling small businesses to work smarter with richer data and reporting analytics.
Microsoft recognised that not all companies would be comfortable selecting an Enterprise option, particularly those that didn’t need access to sophisticated, enterprise-grade tools in Dynamics 365. Business Central replaces Microsoft’s interim Business Edition package – Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations – and has culminated it into a new and improved all-in-one business management solution for SMBs.
What’s in Business Central?
Depending on your needs, Dynamics 365 Business Central can be bought as one of two SKUs; Essentials and Premium. While Essentials offers everything a small or medium business may need to interact with the customer, Premium adds the manufacturing and service management modules to its core service.
If your customer is transitioning from another CRM and already has access to budgets, sales orders and invoices, purchase orders, workflows and account schedules but needs cross-functionality and easy access to document management with image capture, distribution, shipping and warehousing elements, Business Central could be a viable option for them.

Microsoft App Integration
Just like the Enterprise packages for Dynamics 365, Business Central has superb integrated functionality with Office 365. It allows your customers to work from within their Outlook and easily apply a sales quote to an email without ever leaving the application. The same functionality goes for Excel, too. By using Excel Online, your customers can access customer data from Dynamics and make live changes, or export the data into Excel and edit the information to create reports.
Alongside Office 365, Business Central integrates with Power BI. After your customers are finished editing their data in Excel, they can visualise it within Power BI and create charts or boards for their colleagues to view.
As an added bonus, Dynamics 365 Business Central can be customised to your personal preferences. Use the ‘app designer’ to build your own personal extension; customise name sections and drag fields into a specific order to capture information much faster.
Is Business Central right for my customer?
Dynamics 365 isn’t a ‘starter’ CRM & ERP solution for small to medium businesses. It’s designed to be pliable, to boost productivity and to nurture customer relationships in a more sophisticated manner compared to other CRMs on the market. If your customer doesn’t already have a CRM in place, Dynamics 365 probably isn’t the best option, Nimble CRM may be an easier starter kit instead. But if they’re looking to upgrade from their current systems and need one single source for access to customer information, Business Central is a great talking point.
